Member Spotlight: Eileen Verner

#FWHR sat down with Eileen Verner, Human Resource Manager at Harris, Finley & Bogle, P.C.

Learn more about Eileen by reading the Q & A below!

Q: How do you describe your job to friends outside of HR?

A: I make sure our company is an ideal place to work with an enjoyable atmosphere, great benefits, and competitive pay. Sometimes that means telling people things they don't want to hear, but most of the time it is focusing on the positive things and encouraging learning and teamwork. I'm a "department of one", so each day is different.

Q: What would surprise people to learn about you?

A: I've been widowed twice: at age 25 and again at 36. But you'll rarely see me without a smile on my face. I've learned that life throws its challenges at everyone and am actually thankful this has been mine, because it came with a lot of love before loss. My faith in God has gotten me through every minute and loss makes for powerful testimony because it is something everyone can relate to in some way. I am now remarried and my sweet husband John endures lots of teasing from friends about the wisdom of marrying me!

Q: What is something people are rarely surprised to learn about you?

A: I'm a crazy cat lady! My sister and I have been obsessed with cats since we could chase them down as toddlers. I've had 12 in my life, with as many as 5 at a time. I currently have 4: Mo, Pickles, Glitter, and Lilly. You've met Glitter - she's the poster child for the member profile update campaign! Oh, I have 2 dogs too: Mongo and Maycie. They seem to like my husband more than me. Go figure.

Q: How do you spend your time away from work?

A: I love concerts! My husband and I are always on the lookout for great Christian or Country music concerts. Up next- For King and Country in April, and Off the Rails in May!

Q: Why did you join FWHR?

A: I was born and raised in Fort Worth but moved to Ohio in college, so I had no professional connections here. I wanted to get to know local people in HR so I could build my network.

Q: What has been your favorite event to participate in at FWHR?

A: I enjoy the Employment Law Update because the information is presented by attorneys. I've worked in law firms for most of my career, even before I worked in HR. I can take what I've learned and bring it bak to work from an attorney's perspective, which helps with my credibility.

Q: Why did you join the board of FWHR?

A: I saw the benefits of membership immediately upon joining and wanted to do more to support its members. I've made professional connections and personal friendships and hope to continue serving for a long time!

Q: What would you say to convince a person they should join FWHR?

A: FWHR is an all-in-one resource for your personal and professional development. You'll build your network, receive top-quality education, learn about employment opportunities, and have fun along the way!

Notable Quotables

This month's notable quotable comes from Patty Revis, Director of Human Resources at Unity One Credit Union. Patty attended our March luncheon with guest speaker, Clint Reese.

We asked Patty about her experience at the luncheon and
what part of Clint's speech was most memorable to her.

"What stood out to me most was Clint's emphasis on the importance of action in creating company culture. You can have emotional intelligence, but it's useless if you can't turn it into action. Also, I liked his approach to self awareness. Clint said you can't work on others until you work on yourself first. It's similar to the safety speeches on airplanes; Put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping others with theirs."

FWHR President, Jon Evans, poses with Clint Reese and his rubber band ball. When Clint was 15, he came down with a life-threatening case of meningitis. One of his memorable childhood doctors helped him get started on the ball as a way to take his mind off of his troubles, and years later it's become a symbol of the challenges he's faced, and a way to self-reflect.

Other Highlights and Fun Facts

  • 90% of people describe themselves as self-aware, but studies show that closer to 10% are actually self-aware.

  • Clint Reese and his brother-in-law own thousands of collectible action figures, including a spider-man figurine that is worth over $1,000!

CHECKING IN ON THE S/PHR PREP CLASS

Margie Kelly, Payroll Specialist at SilverCreek Materials, talked with FWHR about her passion for Human Resources. We asked her explain why she signed up for the S/PHR prep class, and what she hopes to achieve with her certification.

"I have been in payroll, accounting, and human resources throughout my entire career. I've always had a passion for helping people and a desire to get certified in human resources, but haven't had the opportunity until now. As a servant to my employees, achieving this goal will not only affirm to myself that I'm capable, but it will be an outward reflection of my love for this line of work."

If you see Margie at a luncheon or FWHR event, we encourage you to take a moment to visit with her about her experience in the S/PHR Prep Class and share some encouraging words.

FWHR Partners With JobLinks

Job Links of Tarrant County is a great place to connect the business communities recruiting needs and organizations who are working with qualified job applicants to find employment. Originally a function of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce,
it is now on its own and thriving with a group of dedicated volunteers and fantastic partners like FWHR.

Fort Worth HR was one of the very first partners to step up to support this grass roots effort and we are proud to be a part of Job Links! At its core, Job Links is a networking event like none other in the area. People connect over jobs, talent acquisition, opportunities, events, connections, contracts and most importantly RESOURCES!

The meetings are held at 8:30 am on the first Wednesday of the month with the exceptions of January, June, July and December. Each month a new host location steps up to provide breakfast and coffee for the group of 75 professionals who attend.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to attend, please consider it. The next meeting is from 8:30 am – 10:30 am on Wednesday, April 3rd at Fort Worth Housing Solutions, 1201 E. 13th Street, Fort Worth, TX 76102. You can register here.

For any questions about Job Links please send email info@fwhr.org with the subject line "Job Links".

    MEMBER DIRECTORY CAMPAIGN UPDATE

Our one month kitty campaign that presented three members with Visa gift cards was a success. FWHR had 102 pictures of members in its system before the campaign began and we ended with 151 by the March 18 deadline. That's nearly a 50% increase of member pictures into our system.

Additionally, many members updated their profiles too. These updates will help the Board when we contact members for future FWHR opportunities.

Congratulations to the winners of the $125 Visa gift cards at the March luncheon:

    Lesa Blakey

    Diana Cooper

    Gina Smith

Thank you to all who participated. Remember, pictures can help you identify each other before or after you meet in person. While it's too late for this go-round, members, be sure you update your profiles and get your pictures into FWHR.org so you're eligible for our next campaign. We'll see you next time.

    ATTENTION EMPLOYERS AND CANDIDATES

We are actively connecting employers and job seekers at our monthly meetings.

At the beginning of our luncheons, we will ask employers and job seekers to briefly speak to our audience about any open positions or desired job roles. This will give our members an opportunity to share more about themselves and/or any job openings.

We encourage you to participate if this applies to you. Come prepared with a few brief comments and have fun!

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN THE SPOTLIGHT?

FWHR cares about our members on more than just a professional level. We want to know about your fun adventures and share them as a group. If you have something fun and exciting that you did recently, please submit a picture and a few lines about it.

Tell us about your awesome adventures and we will highlight it at the monthly luncheon and in the newsletter!

Please send your pictures to info@fwhr.org with the subject line "Member Spotlight". We look forward to getting to know you better!
